Excel - Fixed Objects will move

Modified on Wed, 15 May at 1:30 PM

The "Fixed Objects will move" error typically occurs in Excel when there are objects (such as charts, images, or shapes) on the worksheet that are positioned with the option "Don't move or size with cells" selected. This error message is a notification that the objects may be repositioned due to changes in the worksheet.

Here are a few suggestions to help resolve the issue:

  1. Adjust the objects' positioning:
    • Right-click on the object and choose "Size and Properties" or "Format Picture/Shape" (depending on the type of object).
    • In the properties or formatting options, make sure the object is set to "Move and size with cells" instead of "Don't move or size with cells".
    • Repeat this process for any other objects on the worksheet.
  2. Check for hidden objects:
    • Objects that are hidden or partially outside of the visible area of the worksheet can still trigger the error message.
    • Use the "Select Objects" option in the "Home" tab of the Excel ribbon to select and delete any hidden or partially visible objects.
  3. Review compatibility mode:
    • If you are working with an older Excel file format (e.g., .xls), save the file in the newer format (e.g., .xlsx) to ensure full compatibility with the current version of Excel.
  4. Clear the Excel cache:
    • Close Excel and any other Office applications.
    • Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box.
    • Type %temp% and press Enter. This will open the temporary files folder.
    • Select all files in the folder and delete them.
    • Restart Excel and try opening your workbooks again.
